台湾のコーヒー農園は、環境保護、経済的自立、社会福祉に貢献しながら、持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)に沿った取り組みを行っています。環境保護の面では、有機農法が促進されており、農薬や化学肥料の使用を減らす、または使わないことで土壌と水質が保たれています。さらに、水資源の最適化のためにドリップ灌漑システムや雨水貯留タンクが導入されています。また、生物多様性の保護と気候変動への適応のために、さまざまな作物を栽培し、エコロジカルバランスを維持しつつ質の高いコーヒー豆を生産しています。

経済的には、観光と農業を組み合わせたアグリツーリズムが導入され、訪問者に農場体験を提供することで地域の活性化に貢献しています。また、高品質なコーヒーの生産と関連商品の開発により、農園経営が強化され、経済的自立を目指しています。

社会的な貢献として、これらの農場は雇用機会を創出すると同時に、農業を通じた教育と訓練を提供しています。地元住民や若者に雇用を提供することで、地域経済を支え、伝統や文化の保護にも寄与しています。

今後、台湾のコーヒー農園は、気候変動や高齢化といった課題に取り組み、政府、企業、消費者と連携しながら持続可能な開発をさらに推進していきます。

Farm Story

Sen Yue High Peak Coffee Estate, located in mountainous Nantou County, Taiwan, faced significant water management challenges due to its terrain. Owner Wu Zhenhong experimented with various irrigation methods before successfully implementing a drip irrigation system in 2014. This system conserves water, reduces weed growth, and allows precise fertilizer application, though it requires high water quality and has a substantial initial cost.

The estate’s irrigation system begins at a water tower, with pressure-reducing valves installed every 10 meters to ensure consistent water flow across the steep terrain. Drippers delivering 4 liters per hour were carefully selected for each coffee tree.

Beyond coffee, the estate cultivates shiitake mushrooms and mung beans, increasing ecological diversity and economic stability. Wu has also planted various tree species for afforestation, transforming the area into an ecological park that attracts diverse wildlife, including protected species.

Visitors must hike 2.5 kilometers through a forest trail to reach the estate, experiencing a natural history museum-like environment. The pristine surroundings provide ideal conditions for coffee cultivation, resulting in unique flavors nurtured by nature.

Sen Yue High Peak’s slogan, “One sip of Sen Yue High Peak Coffee, and you can taste an entire forest,” reflects Wu’s commitment to not only producing excellent coffee but also preserving the land’s enduring beauty. This dedication required years of exploration and perfection in growing coffee at 1450 meters elevation while coexisting harmoniously with the forest ecosystem.

Zhulun Farm, located in northern Taiwan, was transformed from a citrus and tea plantation into a coffee farm by Mr. Qiu Jianming upon his retirement. The farm adheres to organic practices, focusing on reforestation, biodiversity, and sustainable water management. They use innovative techniques like rainwater harvesting, composting, and liquid organic fertilizers to nurture their coffee plants while deterring wild boars.

The farm has adapted to rising temperatures by replacing heat-sensitive Typica coffee with more resilient varieties like Geisha, grown under shade trees. Zhulun Farm is pesticide-free due to the area’s low pest presence, ensuring chemical-free coffee for consumers.

Mr. Qiu, drawing from his jewelry background, approaches coffee production with meticulous care. The farm’s northern location results in a prolonged harvesting period from November to May. Mr. Qiu employs a unique slow-drying method using dehumidifiers to enhance flavor quality.

Zhulun Farm also serves as an educational center, hosting activities that allow visitors to experience coffee cultivation firsthand while promoting environmental awareness. Through adaptability and innovation, the farm has overcome climate challenges, winning top prizes in regional specialty coffee competitions in recent years. Each cup of Zhulun coffee reflects Mr. Qiu’s dedication to quality and his harmonious approach to working with the environment.
